The version of TED AI 2026 most people are searching for, though, is a San Francisco event that never existed. This page previously carried a fabricated “April 30 to May 1, 2026” date. TEDAI San Francisco has been retired, and TED said so directly

TED’s own TEDAI conference hub carries this line verbatim as of 2026-08-24: “There won’t be a TEDAI event in San Francisco this year. What started as an experiment, to spark dialogue around generative AI, became something the Bay Area absorbed into its DNA. When a conversation becomes part of the culture, you know it landed. This chapter is closing, but the conversations it started aren’t going anywhere.”

That is TED’s own framing, not a leak. The former event site `tedai-sanfrancisco.ted.com` now redirects to the same closure notice. Public event records place TEDAI San Francisco editions in 2023, 2024, and its final October 21-22, 2025 run before TED made the call.

Anyone landing here expecting a “TED AI 2026 San Francisco” recap should read that as discontinued, not delayed. The fabricated date this page previously showed was an unsourced placeholder that did not correspond to any TEDAI San Francisco edition, any TEDAI Vienna edition, or TED’s own flagship 2026 conference in Vancouver (April 13-17, “All of Us”). TED AI 2026 refers to TEDAI Vienna, October 28-30 at the Hofburg

TEDAI Vienna is Europe’s official TED conference on AI, running since 2024. The 2026 edition runs October 28-30 at the Hofburg Palace, the former imperial residence of the Habsburgs and still the official residence of Austria’s federal president. The palace complex spans more than 300,000 square metres in central Vienna.

The three-day arc, per TEDAI Vienna’s official 2026 program page, runs:

TED’s own listing flags “more coming soon,” so the lineup is not final. TED puts the fuller program at 60+ speakers across 48 sessions across the three days, which is a dense schedule for an event that sells itself on curation over volume.

The Hofburg pricing is tiered, and there is a cheaper option most recaps skip

Almost every listing quoting TEDAI Vienna’s prices stops at full-conference passes. TED’s own program page lists single-day passes starting at €450. If your interest is Talks Day only, or the trip cannot spare three days, the single-day tier is a fraction of the standard pass, and it is the number I would lead with when budget is the deciding factor.

Standard pricing holds until September 15, 2026 or until the tier sells out, and these tiers do sell out (the Early Supporter band was already gone at the time of research). Waiting to buy at the door is not a strategy that works here.

TED has not announced a public livestream for 2026. If Vienna is not an option, the realistic path is to wait for individual talks to land on ted.com after the event.

Discovery Day’s Idea Adventures are the real differentiator

Discovery Day (October 29) is more structured than the usual “workshops and panels” line reads. Panels run across three named stages: The Boardroom (workplace and organizational AI transformation), The Salon (AI’s impact on society, science, and culture), and The Playground (hands-on experimentation and role-play).

The part I would plan the day around, though, is the Idea Adventures. Off-site sessions that pull attendees out of the Hofburg and into Vienna itself:

• An AI perfumery workshop at the Naturhistorisches Museum.
• Rewriting museum labels with a language model at the Belvedere Upper Palace.
• Machine-listening sound walks through the Prater and along the Danube Canal.
• A robotics session at TU Wien.
• An AI horror-shorts screening at the Gartenbaukino cinema.

That is a smarter use of a conference day than sitting through a fourth panel, and it doubles as the closest thing TEDAI offers to a built-in Vienna city experience. If the trip is meant to earn its airfare, this is where.

What TEDAI San Francisco actually delivered across its run

Since there is no 2026 San Francisco edition to recap, the honest thing is to recap the one that closed the chapter: TEDAI San Francisco 2025, October 21-22, at the Herbst Theatre (Day 1, mainstage TED Talks) and SHACK15 (Day 2, panels and interactive sessions), under the theme “Are We Bold Enough?”

The 2025 speaker lineup, drawn from TEDAI San Francisco’s own social announcements, included Prem Akkaraju (CEO, Stability AI), May Habib (cofounder and CEO, Writer), Rafael Rafailov (researcher, Stanford to DeepMind), Eric Zelikman, and John Thickstun. Not Sam Altman or Jensen Huang household names, and that is consistent with TEDAI’s format. It curates for the strength of the idea over the size of the name.

The bigger legacy moment came from an earlier edition. Aravind Srinivas’s talk, “How AI will answer questions we haven’t thought to ask”, was recorded at TEDAI San Francisco in October 2024 and has since racked up more than 845,000 plays on TED’s own platform (checked 2026-08-24). Long-tail impact that a lot of higher-attendance technical conferences never get.

TED did not publish an official post-event attendance figure for the final 2025 SF edition. What I can confirm is the venue context: the Herbst Theatre seats roughly 900 to 930 for mainstage sessions, and Day 2 shifted to the smaller SHACK15 space. I would rather flag the gap than round a venue-capacity estimate into a headcount.

Who should look at TEDAI Vienna, and who should skip it

Executives and policy-adjacent leaders weighing AI governance decisions are the clearest fit. TEDAI Vienna’s own attendee data (1 in 3 executives across finance, policy, healthcare, and engineering) signals a room built for cross-industry strategic conversation, not hands-on technical workshops.

You should watch Peter Steinberger’s session specifically if you build or evaluate agent infrastructure. If you miss TEDAI San Francisco’s format, treat Vienna as the closest continuation, with the caveat that the price point, executive skew, and gala-and-ballroom format are a genuinely different experience than a two-day Bay Area conference split across a theatre and a coworking space.
