The load-bearing story was not a product launch. It was European tech sovereignty, a hard pivot from AI chatbots to autonomous agents, and space arriving as a mainstage business track. I track VivaTech because the conversations happening on stage in Paris in June tend to show up as product roadmaps across the AI tools I review here six months later. It sits outside the usual Silicon Valley echo chamber. That is where European sovereignty concerns, French policy, and global AI vendors collide in the same exhibition hall, which is why it earns its slot on my AI events hub.

The rest of this post is a recap, not a preview. VivaTech 2026 happened over two months ago. Every claim below is sourced to VivaTech’s own recap, CGTN’s June 18 coverage, or Wikipedia’s event record. Where I could not verify a number independently, I say so.

VivaTech 2026 corrected the dates that were circulating

VivaTech 2026 ran Wednesday to Saturday, June 17-20, 2026 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, 1 Place de la Porte de Versailles, 75015 Paris (checked 2026-08-24, vivatech.com). For the 10th anniversary, organizers extended the footprint with a Champs-Élysées activation: 35+ free open-air demos of AI, robotics, health, mobility, and space, spanning roughly 8,000 sqm.

Independent confirmation of the dates comes from CGTN, which reported on June 18, 2026 that “the conference runs from June 17 to 20.” That timestamp matters specifically because the previous version of this page carried “June 3-6, 2026,” a date that does not match any primary source I could find. Correcting it here.

Germany’s Country of the Year pick is worth a beat. VivaTech has run this recognition for years, but Germany was the first European nation to receive it. A deliberate signal, in an edition otherwise obsessed with sovereignty, that the organizers wanted to highlight cross-border European cooperation, not lean on a non-European guest of honor narrative.

Sovereignty was the theme, not AI hype

VivaTech ran 175 sessions with “sovereignty” in the title, spanning AI, cloud, cybersecurity, semiconductors, quantum, and defense. This was the load-bearing thread across almost every stage.

Christel Heydemann, CEO of Orange, gave the moment a name on stage, describing the suspension of Anthropic’s Mythos model for non-US users as “the Mythos wake-up call.” That is the point where talk shifted from model performance to control over the infrastructure underneath it. Alibaba co-founder Joe Tsai made a less confrontational but equally pointed case: “Right now, all of your eggs are in one basket. Why not get a second basket to put your eggs in?” Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier pushed furthest, tying sovereignty directly to civil liberties: “If you’re a citizen, you’re not secure, and you cannot have a private life, you’re not free.”

Olivier Biton, head of technological transformation at Crédit Agricole, framed it as operational rather than political: “You need to know where your data are, who can access them, and who can shut your services in what time frame.” A separate session cited a statistic that 74% of European listed companies rely on US email services. That is the kind of dependency figure that makes these panels feel like a business continuity problem, not abstract policy talk.

AI shifted from assistants to autonomous agents

The center of gravity moved. Stanislas Polu, co-founder of Dust, said on stage that “we code maybe 20% of the time and the rest is written by the machine,” crediting Anthropic’s Opus 4.5 in November as a real step change. OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger put the next evolution more bluntly: “We went a level up to talk to AI, and now we went up another level where AI talks to AI,” predicting a future with “a billion programmers that don’t know that they program.”

I would apply the same skepticism to Steinberger’s own framing that I would apply to any founder promoting their platform, but the demand side backs the direction. Per CGTN, freelance marketplace Malt reported a real surge in demand for AI-agent skills across Europe. Space arrived as a business track, not a novelty

The opening ceremony featured a video greeting from astronauts aboard the ISS, and Jeff Bezos joined Blue Origin CEO David Limp on the main stage day one: “Every space company you can think of has a backlog. The demand for launch is insatiable. We are not demand constrained. We are supply constrained.”

European founders picked up the same thread differently. Hélène Huby, founder of The Exploration Company, built a crew and cargo capsule before a rocket, specifically because Europe was spending roughly 500 million euros a year flying astronauts on American vehicles. Maia Space CEO Yohann Leroy put the real gap plainly: “We have in Europe the expertise, we have the technology. What Europe misses is the ability to solve this rocket equation at conditions that are viable from an economic standpoint.” The event closed with ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, reflecting on nearly 400 days in orbit: “It is true that it is hard to do justice to the beauty of the Earth.”

The named announcements worth remembering

VivaTech is not a single-vendor launch event like NVIDIA GTC or Google Cloud Next, so there was no equivalent headline hardware reveal. What it delivered was a dense cluster of named demonstrations and awards.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi headlined as India’s first AI Country Partner. His argument: AI only matters if it reaches beyond enterprise buyers. He pointed to India’s digital payments infrastructure and AI tools built for dairy farmers, drone pilots, and fishermen as evidence that innovation should be “all inclusive.”

The inaugural VivaTech x Bloomberg Awards launched. Sir Tim Berners-Lee received the Visionary Award, Joe Tsai the Leadership Award, Yann LeCun the Momentum Award, Peter Steinberger the Breakthrough Award, Jeannette zu Fürstenberg the Investor Award, May Habib the Rising Star Award, and Ukraine the CitizenTech Award.

Robotics drew large floor crowds. Chinese robotics company Unitree demonstrated a humanoid robot with French neuro-AI company HABS, using an EEG headband to let a human control the robot through brain activity rather than spoken commands (CGTN, June 18, 2026).

Energy emerged as AI’s real bottleneck, not compute. Multiple sessions converged on the same warning: data centers already consume roughly 1.5% of the world’s electricity, a share expected to double by 2030, while connecting new capacity to Europe’s grid can take seven to ten years. GE Vernova’s Pablo Koziner described a demand supercycle pushing electricity’s share of global energy use from roughly 20% today to nearly 50% by 2050, and colleague Philippe Piron noted AI factories can swing power draw by up to 15 megawatts in milliseconds. Grids were never built to absorb that.

The 200,000 figure is real, with one honest caveat

VivaTech’s own post-event figures come from a single consistent recap: 200,000 attendees from 165 countries, 15,000+ startups, 4,500 partners, and more than 5 billion in combined social media reach.

Context helps. Wikipedia’s event history shows the first edition in 2016 drew 45,000 visitors, growing past 100,000 by 2018, past 150,000 in 2023 (the year VivaTech noted overtaking CES in Las Vegas), 165,000+ in 2024, and 180,000+ in 2025. The 200,000 for this 10th-anniversary edition continues a genuine multi-year growth trend, not a single inflated one-off number.

The caveat: these are self-reported figures. I could not find a fully independent, third-party audited attendance count for 2026. Normal for trade shows of this size, but it means 200,000 should read as “what the organizer reported,” not an independently verified headcount. CGTN’s coverage confirms scale, themes, and dates, not the specific attendance figure.

Who VivaTech 2026 was actually built for

Enterprise decision-makers evaluating AI vendor lock-in and infrastructure sovereignty got the most directly usable content. The 175 sovereignty-tagged sessions covered concrete operational questions (where your data lives, who can access it, who can shut off your service) that map onto vendor contract negotiations happening right now.

Founders building agentic AI tools had strong reason to attend for the Dust and OpenClaw sessions alone. The Malt demand-side data on European agent-skill hiring is more useful than any keynote claim.

European investors and corporate innovation teams got real value from the space and quantum tracks. Huby’s and Leroy’s sessions on commercial viability gaps in European space, plus the IBM and Airbus quantum work, are named-company detail that does not come through in a two-paragraph news summary.

Pure application-layer builders with no European market exposure got comparatively little actionable material. The sovereignty framing is a European business and policy concern, and the replays cover the AI-agent and robotics content without four days in Paris.

Anyone chasing a single splashy hardware or model announcement should look elsewhere. The value here is breadth and policy signal, not a headline reveal.

The trip was defensible for the right audience

For the audience this event is genuinely built for (European enterprise buyers navigating AI vendor sovereignty questions, agentic AI founders, and anyone tracking AI infrastructure colliding with energy constraints), VivaTech 2026 delivered real, quotable substance. The sovereignty sessions felt like an actual working-through of a shared problem, from banking (Crédit Agricole) to telecoms (Orange) to hardware security (Ledger), not conference filler.

For the much larger group reading about VivaTech after the fact, the session replays are not gated behind an in-person pass. Unlike NVIDIA GTC’s single two-hour keynote that compresses a year of announcements into one free video, VivaTech spreads its value across dozens of parallel stage sessions over four days. Pulling this recap together took real digging across VivaTech’s newsroom, day-by-day digests, and independent press.

VivaTech 2027 is already confirmed for June 16-19, 2027, back at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. If your work touches European AI infrastructure decisions, agentic AI tooling, or space-tech investment, it belongs on next year’s list. If your business sits entirely outside the European market, it stays a lower-priority stop than NVIDIA GTC or Google Cloud Next for your roadmap.
