Character AI Alternatives by Job, With Safety Checks

Character AI alternatives by job: Kindroid for a companion, Pi for free chat, NovelAI for stories, LM Studio offline. Prices and policies checked Oct 2026.

The best Character AI alternatives each take over one job, because nothing else matches its library of user-made characters. What drives people away is usually one specific thing, so each section below answers one of them, with the price, age check and data policy checked on the vendor’s own pages.

Why people leave Character AI

In my Character AI review a character forgot a detail I had given it within 10 to 15 messages, and the content filter blocked scenes with nothing inappropriate in them. The free tier now carries full ads, and your chats train its models unless you are in the EEA or UK.

The bigger changes are about safety. Users it identifies as under 18 can no longer chat with characters, under the age assurance rules announced in October 2025. Families have sued Character Technologies, alleging its chatbots harmed their children, and in January 2026 Google and Character.AI agreed to settle several of those lawsuits, the Washington Post reported. A settlement is not an admission of liability.

A long-term companion: Kindroid

If what you liked was one character who grows with you, Kindroid is built around exactly that. You set your companion’s name, gender, backstory and personality, talk by text, and subscribers add voice and live video calls. It is the only app on this page with documented video calls.

Kindroid’s homepage leads with a video call, a subscriber feature.

It costs $15.99 a month in the app stores, or $159.99 a year. Kindroid says buying on the web is usually cheaper but no longer publishes those prices. The free tier ended on 1 October 2026; new accounts now get a one-time preview of 50 messages before the account turns read-only.

Its age check is the strictest here. The service is adults only, a paid subscription counts as verification, and free accounts flagged by its behaviour check must verify through Yoti by selfie estimate or government ID. That check exists because its moderation guidelines allow adult content between verified adults, and this page covers Kindroid as a companion app only.

What you give up: a free tier, and clarity on training. The terms do not say whether chats train its models, but they do let Kindroid de-identify and reuse private content.

A friendly, non-romantic chat: Pi

Pi, from Inflection AI, is for talking things through rather than playing a character. It is free, with no paid tier, on the web, iOS and Android, and you can start on the web without an account.

What you give up: training on your chats by default, with an opt-out in your account settings. Inputs are kept up to 15 days after you delete them, outputs indefinitely. Inflection has been focused on enterprise products since 2024, though the app is still updated regularly.

If you would rather keep conversations on your phone, Kin stores them on your device by default and says it does not train on your data. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, from $20 a month in the App Store, and the AI companion apps comparison sets out its caveats.

Writing stories with an AI: NovelAI

For people who used Character AI as a co-writer rather than a friend, NovelAI’s story product is the closer match. You write with the AI rather than chatting to it, and the story editor saves Memory, Author’s Note and Lorebook entries with each story.

Every plan includes unlimited text generation on the GLM-4.6 model. Tablet is $10 a month with an 8,192-token memory, Scroll $15 with 12,288 and Opus $25 with 28,672. There is no ongoing free plan, only a one-off trial of 50 text generations. It runs in the browser, and the terms set 18 as the minimum age.

Privacy is the strongest argument for it. Stories are encrypted in your browser with a key derived from your password, so Anlatan, the company behind it, stores only ciphertext and states that prompts are not logged. It does not say either way whether your writing trains its models. NovelAI also sells an image generator; this page covers the writing product only.

What you give up: a mobile app (it is web only), and any free tier after the trial.

Character roleplay on your own computer: SillyTavern and KoboldCpp

This pair replaces Character AI’s chat window and its servers with software on your own machine. KoboldCpp runs the AI model. SillyTavern is the interface you chat in, where you create character cards and switch between them.

KoboldCpp is a single program with nothing to install. It runs GGUF model files, which you download separately, on Windows, Linux and Apple Silicon Macs, with optional Nvidia, AMD or Intel graphics acceleration. Its wiki puts a 7B model at 8GB of RAM or more and a 13B model at 16GB. The project says it can run fully offline and does not send your inputs anywhere. Its README warns that koboldcpp.com is a fake site, so download it from the project’s GitHub page.

SillyTavern needs Node.js 20 or newer and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It ships no model of its own and connects to a backend you choose, KoboldCpp included. The project says it runs no hosted service and does not track user data, and your chats are files in its data folder.

Both are free and open source under AGPL-3.0. Write your own characters rather than importing them from third-party card sites, some of which researchers have flagged for hosting harmful personas.

What you give up: setup time, and output quality that depends on the model your hardware can run.

Private, offline chat: LM Studio

If the reason you are leaving is that your chats sit on someone else’s servers, LM Studio is the simplest way to run a model yourself. It is a desktop app for Windows, Macs with Apple Silicon and Linux, and once a model is downloaded it works fully offline. Element Labs, the company behind it, says chats never leave your device for local models and that the app carries no telemetry.

It is free for local use, including at work since July 2025. Optional cloud plans start at $20 a month, but you do not need one to chat with a model on your own machine. LM Studio recommends 16GB of RAM or more, although 8GB works with small models. For the same job on the command line, the ChatGPT alternatives page picks Ollama.

What you give up: characters and memory built for roleplay. LM Studio is a general assistant, and the app itself is closed source even though several of its components are open.

Trying written characters for free: ChatBrat AI

ChatBrat AI is a curated catalog of staff-written characters and scenarios, free while in beta. In my ChatBrat AI review the writing was sharper than anything else I opened in this category, memory only switched on with an account, and its filter rejected an ordinary sentence.

It is the only app in the companion apps comparison that passes all six of its checks. It names its operator, Scorpion Pictures Holding LLC, trains on conversations only if you opt in, and lets you delete your data in Settings.

What you give up: web only, a smaller catalog than Character AI, and legal pages still marked as awaiting sign-off. Planned plans start at $4.99 a month once payments go live.

Tools that didn’t make the list

These three come up in most Character AI alternatives lists. Each is left out because of what a named third party has documented.

Character AI alternatives: common questions

Is Chai or Character AI better?

Character AI, of the two. It has the far larger catalog and a documented age check, while Chai is left out here because of the 2023 case recorded by the AI Incident Database. Neither is first choice for every job, which is why this page is split by task.

What are some alternatives to Character.ai that don’t require login?

Pi lets you start chatting on its website without an account, and keeps logged-out chats for up to 60 days. LM Studio, KoboldCpp and SillyTavern need no account at all, because they run on your own computer.

Is C AI unfiltered now?

No. Character.AI’s help centre says it does not support pornographic content, and users it identifies as under 18 cannot chat with characters at all. In my review, the filter also blocked scenes with nothing inappropriate in them.

Keep Character AI and add one tool

If the catalog is what keeps you there, there is no need to leave. Keep Character AI for browsing characters and add the one tool on this page that covers the job it does badly: Kindroid for a companion that remembers you, NovelAI for long stories, or LM Studio when the conversation should stay on your own machine.
