The best AI chatbot for roleplay depends on what kind of roleplay you mean: a character you return to every day, a story you co-write, or a scene you run on your own computer with nobody watching. Seven options are below, each matched to one of those, and each checked on its own pages for price, age rules and what it does with your chats.
Two of the apps ranking highest for this search are left out on purpose, with sources, at the end.

The seven picks, by how you play
1. SillyTavern and KoboldCpp, for roleplay that stays on your machine
SillyTavern is the interface and KoboldCpp runs the model, both on your own Windows, macOS or Linux computer. SillyTavern handles character cards, chat history and fine-grained generation settings; KoboldCpp is a single program that loads a GGUF model and serves it locally, with graphics acceleration on Nvidia, AMD or Intel cards. Both are free under AGPL-3.0, and neither project runs a hosted service, so your scenes never leave the machine.
What you give up: convenience and model quality, which depends on what your hardware can hold. Write your own characters rather than importing cards from third-party sites, some of which researchers have flagged for harmful personas. The best local LLM apps list covers which models to start with.

2. NovelAI, for story-led roleplay you co-write
NovelAI treats roleplay as a story you write together. Its editor keeps Memory, Author’s Note and Lorebook entries with each story, and every plan includes unlimited text generation on the GLM-4.6 model, from $10 a month. Stories are encrypted in your browser with a key derived from your password, and Anlatan, the company behind it, says prompts are not logged. It also sells an image generator, which this list does not cover.
What you give up: a free plan beyond a one-off trial of 50 text generations, and a mobile app; it runs in the browser. NovelAI does not say either way whether your writing trains its models.
3. Kindroid, for one character that remembers you

Kindroid builds everything around a single character.
Kindroid suits long-running roleplay with one character whose name, backstory and personality you write yourself. It keeps the conversation until you delete the character, and subscribers can switch to voice or video. It costs $15.99 a month in the app stores, after a one-time 50-message preview.
It is adults only. A paid subscription counts as proof of age, and flagged free accounts must verify through Yoti. Kindroid’s moderation guidelines allow adult content between verified adults; this list covers its character roleplay only.
What you give up: the terms do not say whether chats train its models, but they do license Kindroid to de-identify and freely use private content.
4. Claude, for long-form fiction without sexual content
Anthropic’s usage policy allows fiction and role-play but bans sexually explicit content for everyone, so Claude suits adventure, mystery and drama rather than romance. You can keep a character or setting in account-wide instructions or a project’s instructions, and memory is on by default on every plan. Claude is free on web, desktop and mobile, and Pro costs $17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly.
Claude is for adults only; accounts that appear to belong to a minor are disabled until the user verifies through Yoti. Deleted chats leave Anthropic’s systems within 30 days.
What you give up: chats train Anthropic’s models unless you opt out in the privacy settings, and incognito chats are the only ones never used.
5. ChatGPT, for roleplay inside an everyday assistant
OpenAI allows roleplay and creative writing, restricts sexual content, and puts users it judges to be teenagers into a teen mode that limits romantic and violent roleplay; adults can confirm their age with a selfie or ID through Persona. Custom instructions on every plan let you fix a character’s voice, up to 1,500 characters on the free and Go plans and 5,000 on Plus, and memory works on all plans.
ChatGPT is free with limits, Go costs $8 a month and Plus $20. Custom GPTs are being retired on 11 December 2026, so do not build a character as one.
What you give up: your chats train OpenAI’s models by default, until you switch it off under Data controls, and the minimum age is 13 with a parent’s permission.
6. Paradot, for a companion you shape in detail
Paradot lets you set a character’s appearance, traits, flaws, values and relationship status, and shows what it remembers. Its iPhone listing frames it as a friend or romantic partner.
What you give up: a published price, since Pro plans are priced only inside the app, and clear data handling: its Google Play card says it collects no data while its privacy policy lists messages, photos, video and voice.
7. ChatBrat AI, for trying staff-written scenarios free
ChatBrat AI offers characters and story scenarios written by its own staff rather than users, and is free while in beta. In my ChatBrat AI review the writing stood out, while memory only worked with an account and its filter rejected an ordinary sentence. It trains on conversations only if you opt in.
What you give up: it is web only, payments and pricing are announced but not live, and its legal pages are still marked as awaiting sign-off.
Roleplay apps we don’t recommend
Joyland and CrushOn.AI are among the top Google results for this search. Both are left out, along with Janitor AI, for what has been documented about them.
- Joyland. Its own sitemap, checked on 8 October 2026, indexes public search pages for tags including “16 Years old”, “Child” and “High School Student” alongside an “NSFW” tag. No third-party report names it; this is an editorial judgement based on the vendor’s own pages.
- CrushOn.AI. Graphika’s March 2025 report on harmful character chatbots found personas promoting the sexualisation of minors on several platforms, CrushOn.AI among them, as the AI Incident Database summarises.
- Janitor AI. The same Graphika findings name JanitorAI. Its content rules now bar under-18 users and any romantic portrayal of characters who are likely minors, which does not change the verdict.
AI roleplay questions
Which bot is best for roleplay?
For a long-running character, Kindroid; for co-written stories, NovelAI; for complete privacy, SillyTavern with KoboldCpp on your own computer. If you already pay for ChatGPT or Claude, both handle roleplay well within their rules, and Claude keeps it free of sexual content.
Which AI model is better for roleplay?
It depends on where it runs. Among hosted assistants, Claude allows fiction but no sexual content, while ChatGPT restricts it and limits teen accounts further. If you run models yourself, the choice is open: the local LLM apps guide lists starter models from Google, Qwen, Mistral and OpenAI, all under the Apache 2.0 licence. For Character AI users looking for somewhere new, the Character AI alternatives guide matches a tool to each job.
